In Tolkien's legendarium, the Elves or Quendi are a sundered or divided people. On the continent of Middle-earth, they awoke at Cuiviénen and found themselves split into the tribes of Minyar, Tatyar, and Nelyar. After some time, Oromë called them to live on Aman in Valinor, among the Valar. The Elves were divided into two main groups and many minor ones by that summoning and the Great Journey that followed; these groups were never entirely reunited. Those who answered the summons are the Eldar. In their own language, Primitive Quendian, Oromë gave them the moniker Star People, which translates to "Star People." Those who declined the call were known as the Avari. Although the majority of the Nelyar embarked on the expedition, half of the Avari, or the refusers, were from the greatest tribe, the Nelyar. Eventually, the Eldar moved in their three groupings westward across the northern part of Middle-earth. The Minyar were dubbed as the Vanyar, or Fair Elves, having golden-blond hair. The Tatyar elves that moved westward were referred to as Noldor, or Deep Elves, because of their extensive craft and skill expertise.
The Teleri are the third elven clan of the Eldar people, whose name is translated from Quenya as “The Last”. The reason is that during the Great March to the West they moved more slowly than others, stopping often and for a long time along the way. This is the most numerous of the three Eldar clans, which have more than once been divided into separate nationalities. The Teleri, often referred to as the Lindar or Singers by themselves, were the Nelyar who traveled west. They made their home in Tol Eressëa, east of Aman. The Teleri themselves considered their dialect a separate language from Quenya, and ultimately it was from Telerin that the language of the elves of Beleriand, Sindarin, came from, which later became commonly used by all the elves of Middle-earth.
The elves in the Third Age who remained were a combination of those who had never gone over sea in the first place, and those who survived the wars of the First and Second Age. Elrond, Arwen, and Legolas were born in Middleearth. Galadriel had returned from the West to fight Morgoth in the First Age and stayed with what remained of her people. All the elves are beautiful! That is what matters most.
